Not sure where to put this thread so I'll just leave it here.
Issue:
My friend has an iMac 24" and was using the Airport on it to act as his wireless router in order to broadcast a wireless signal for people that came over to have access to the internet. He unfortunatly lives out in the country with no AT&T 3G and only on Edge and has to use a Verizon USB Modem attached to his computer. He also has an iPod Touch and a iPhone. Problems occured when his iMac would drop the wireless signal to devices that were connected to his network (i.e. PC Laptop, iPhone, iPod Touch). He also had issues with the wireless range not being suitable either. Mainly due to the fact that the iMac's Airport is not really made for use as a standard wireless router. After discussing this issue with me and brainstorming, we fixed the issue.
The Fix:
He purchased a refurbished Airport Extreme (124.99) and attached it via the iMac's Ethernet port and attached the other end in the WAN port of the AE. Went into sharing under the Preferences Menu and shared the internet via the ethernet port as opposed to the previous attepmt at sharing via the Airport. Now he has a much broader range of a wireless signal coming from the AE and He plans on getting a Airport Express to extend his network, something he previously could not do since he had no other device and the Airport Utility didn't recognize the iMac as one of those devices that you need for WDS.
Just thought I would inform others that might be looking into or having the same issue. Hope this helps!
