Yesterday started setting up and configuring our MP6,1 6-core for the office. I will be doing this at home and I have an iMac13,2 (27" late 2012) and a MBP8,3. The iMac has 2 TB-1 ports and the MBP8,3 has one TB-1 port.

According to http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT3924 I should be able to connect the iMac to the MP6,1 via a Thunderbolt cable and then place the iMac13,2 into Target Display Mode (TDM) using the Cmd+F2 keys. I assume the same can be done using the MBP8,3 as well.

As I use only an Apple BT keyboard and mouse I found myself in a Catch 22 situation because I only had one BT keyboard.

Note... The TDM worked for the iMac but did not work for my MBP8,3.

The Catch 22 was that using my only keyboard for the iMac13,2 and placing it into TDM via Cmd+F2 the MP6,1's desktop appeared on the iMac without issues, BUT pairing the BT keyboard to the MP6,1 was not possible as I had to turn off BT on the iMac but could not as TDM was active on it.

This confounded me for a while until the 'penny dropped'.

I had my trusty MBP8,3 handy, right ? So I used it to Share the iMac screen which let me into the iMac's screen and not the MP6,1's screen even though it was displaying on the iMac. Using this technique I turned off the iMac's BT and then was able to pair the iMac's BT keyboard with the MP6,1. Once this was done I quickly enabled screen sharing on the MP6,1 so I could also use that from either the iMac or MBP subsequently.

So yes, I got it working but it was a bit mind boggling to say the least.

No matter, as I have but a single BT keyboard I thought it wise to have another keyboard for backup. As it happened I needed to make some purchase returns for my wife at the Mall and used that opportunity to also visit my local AppleStore in the Mall and bought myself an Apple USB full size KB with numeric pad. Wife's returns easily paid for the KB...

This aspect of having just a single BT keyboard when setting up a new MP6,1 without a dedicated display for the first time needs to be documented clearly by Apple IMO.
