i was wondering if i could use the infrared port on my MBP with an infrared printer, or an infrared phone or not. Or is the port only compatible with the apple remote? thanks!

Are you planning on positioning your printer transceiver directly in front of the MBP obstructing the keyboard?

The infared device on Macs serve solely as an input. One may be able to hack remotes/devices other than an Apple remote to work with it, however it is designed only to work with the Apple remote & front row.

Yes, I use an external display, and use the MBP in lidclosed mode.

That stinks... but thanks for the info! Hopefully someone can come up with a hack!

I can't get my phone to send anything via infrared to my MBP either.

Bluetooth is the way forward - time to update printer? ;)

But the printers are expensive, especially if you look at a $19.95 model and print more than a page or two a month. ;)

Of course new is less headache and more likely to survive and OS update.

Printers are dead cheap now-a-days - average one costing you $60-70 that does good quality.

Compare that price to something 3-4 years ago. Probably be double/triple for similar specs.
