I have a 2011 27" iMac and use the DVI output to connect to my home theater. Since there is no audio with DVI, I am also running an audio cable from the headphone jack of the iMac to my home theater receiver. It's a hassle to keep unplugging the headphone jack to activate the computers internal speakers when I'm computing.

From reading here, I don't see a software solution. If I buy a USB audio output (with headphone jack), will the iMac allow me to set it to always have that audio signal going to my AV receiver while allowing me to use my keyboard controls to adjust volume (or mute) my internal speakers?

Thanks for your help.
