I'm off to the land of the rising sun and I would like to use 3g internet with my Ipad2. Is it possible - do tourists get to buy pay-as-you-go microSIMS with good 3g data rates ?

No. There are no PAYG SIMs with Data. It is possible to rent SIMs, though.
