Using iPad with MacBook pro GarageBand?

It is possible to link the iPad and a MacBook pro together so I can control/use smart instruments and have the data recorded into GarageBand on the MacBook pro? I know there is the gbtouch app, but that looks like it will only cOntrol things like levels and other mixing type things. I kinda would like to use the iPad like you would a midi controller keyboard. Any ideas?
