I've been through several alarm clocks over the years, and with most of them the accuracy of the time drifts over...um.. time. Even one atomic alarm clock I had lost it's accuracy over a few years. I don't like having to reset alarm clocks.

Since I know computers and devices usually keep accurate time, I recently thought to myself, maybe there's a way use a tablet as a bedside alarm clock? I currently don't have an iPad, but have been thinking of getting one.

Can iPadOS be used as an alarm clock? Or is there a separate dedicated iOS alarm clock app available? If so, I just have one concern:

- Can the screen be dimmable or completely off to prevent burn in and battery drainage? And if I wake up in the middle of the night, can I just touch the screen awake to see what time it is?

There is no always on display, even with the new ones. I believe the latest iPhones have this feature though.

iPadOS and iOS have an Apple Clock app which you can set an alarm...

iPhone 14 Pro/Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max have Always On Display which you can completely turn off but you can Tap to Wake or even Raise to Wake to check the time...

I'm not sure about Tap to Wake or Raise to Wake or Always On Display on an iPad but the newer models might have it...

There are other smart devices that can also work as an alarm clock but I guess your first choice is a tablet, specifically the iPad...

iOS 17 introduced StandBy Mode for this purpose, but it hasn't made its way to iPadOS yet.

Edit: I should add, if you're not concerned about the device feeling like a traditional bedside alarm clock, then yes you can use an iPad as an alarm clock (through the Clock app), yes the screen will be off, and yes you can tap screen on all current iPad models Apple sells to wake it (if you buy an older model it might lack it, see Apple's documentation to determine which specific models support tap to wake).

Certainly the combination of iPad with HomePod mini works well to set alarms. This works well for me as I like to listen to an audiobook to fall asleep to and some music when I wake up, but quite an expensive setup just for an alarm.

Is it still the consensus that there in no clock w permanent display, during dimming and sleep?

I’m on iPadOS 18 public beta if that helps
No 3rd party official apps?

I can easily setup bedside clock for iPhone but too small and I believe it eventually goes blacks too.

Should be no burn-in issue with OLED right?

Before I go to bed at night, I press and hold the home button on my iphone (this is how I talk to Siri), and say "Wake me up at eight", in my own language, norwegian. Siri responds: "I set the alarm to eight o'clock", also in norwegian. When I'm woken by the alarm at eight I can click 'stop' or I can click 'snooze' to have ten more minutes. I don't see why I couldn't do this on my iPad also.

Why would you want the ipad to show the clock all night?

I was thinking about buying atomic clock for across the room use. Too $$$. If I ever get my hands on old pad, I’ll use it all the time But for now iPadPro. Just looking for a large readable clock for use during the day. I did not realize it was an actual app not a widget, etc. so when I check never lock in settings, it seems to stay on screen far
