I'm pretty new to this whole wireless/smartphone business, so forgive me if this question seems daft.

Say I were to buy an iPhone 4 for full price from Telus (my local, Canadian provider), could I use this phone internationally, say in Britain on a different network? Not just through roaming, but through sim card swap so I wouldnt be going through Telus whatsoever.

yes, since canadian iphones are unlocked, just swap sim and go

You can as long as the phone is unlocked and if the phone is locked then you either have to ask the carrier to unlock it (most don't) or jailbreak and unlock the phone yourself.

Not all Canadian iphones are unlocked.
The ones bought from an Apple store for full price without contract are factory unlocked.
Others purchased thru resellers, carriers or other means are locked. Im not really sure if they can officially be unlocked later once the contract is up or for a fee though.

Well based on prices I see on Apple.ca, Telus sells them cheaper. Also, not sure how the availability is in Apple stores, thats why I was curious if buying full price from Telus would amount to the same unlocked phone.
