I have ATT now but if I travel to France and Italy how do I prevent my iPhone from using the data plan in the US and just use the GPS feature? Do I get charged from that? If so will it be expensive? I hate to keep switching sim cards or better alternatives?

I live in France and travel with my phone . I just switch off data roaming .

When in Tibet , my altimeter app worked fine ( It was really fun over there as I was all the time between 3600 & 5000m ) and I wasn't charged a cent .

I connect to WiFi when possible .

What GPS feature do you hope to use without data?

Toggle off roaming, toggle off cellular data to be safe. Hell, I'd leave in Airplane mode actually to avoid calls/sms being routed to you. GPS still works IIRC.

I'd personally buy simcards. I have recently for PH and CR with my iPhone 6. It's quite easy.

Are you sure about that? Turning on airplane mode will turn off the GPS as far as I know. For instance there's no EXIF data on location when taking a picture when you're in airplane mode.
