Using iPhone abroad in countries with iPhone networks?

Hi,

I'm going on holiday for two weeks in Hong Kong, and was wondering -- would it be possible for me to buy a PAYG sim from Three (the iPhone network in HK), and put it into my non-jailbroken UK iPhone?

This is probably a stupid question, and I know almost certainly that this won't be possible, but any confirmation either way would be helpful.

Is the phone unlocked? Because otherwise the SIM card won't work, you'd be stuck with international roaming.
