Using iwork 09 on macbook pro with lion

I have office 2004 on my mac mini with snow leopard and i just use word. I am thinking of putting apple pages on my new mbp with lion. Will word and pages be compatible? Can i edit and write a word doc in pages and visa versa? My word 2004 wont work in lion. I need the documengs to be compatible as word.doc documents. Need to know before i buy iworks. I'm talking straightforward documents, nothing fancy. Just page numbers and headers.

You should be fine with page numbers and headers, but the compatibility starts to fall apart with more advanced stuff (tables, charts, etc.)
