I have a mac mini I run as a home server, its running Mojave . I have attached a G-Tech 10TB drive to it and would like to have the macs on my network use it as a time machine backup. I formatted and encrypted the drive and the mac mini can backup to the drive without any issues.

I have changed the permission so the drive is seen over the network, and have selected the settings under sharing so that it be seen as a time machine drive.

The problem comes in when I try to go into time machine and select it as a backup destination. It asks me for a username, I sign in using the remote macs username and password, and then it kicks me out saying......

You do not have the necessary read, write and append privileges on the selected network backup disk.

I have manually changed the permission for everyone to Read and write.

I realize server has been discontinued can I still use this mac min as a time machine server?

You want to connect as the user who is the admin on the server (the mini).

Some make a TM admin account for backing up, so they are not using the main admin account. Makes it a bit easier to manage permissions. In that case, you would set permissions to the TM admin account, and connect with the same TM admin credentials.
