I'm about to get my first smartphone (HTC Incredible) and I'm trying to get my mail ready so that I can use both in a manner that works for me. It could be that if I waited until I had the phone in hand I could figure this out on my own easily but... Here's what I want to do.
I want to be able to view my mail on my phone and delete messages off of it or relabel them specifically for viewing on my computer. This is for messages that will just be too complicated to respond to or manage on the phone.
On the computer side I want to be able to leave messages in the inbox and be able to access them from the phone for viewing on the go with the phone.
My thoughts are that I should have the phone setup for POP with the POP setting set to leave all messages in the inbox. This way I can view all the messages on the phone and if I don't want them on the phone anymore I can just delete (without impact to the message on the server) and then I can get them on my computer later. Also I think I should have the computer setup to IMAP so that any messages I leave in my inbox stay in the inbox so that I can view them on my phone and accordingly anything I remove from the inbox is no longer in the inbox on the server for the phone to view.
I believe that will work for me. Anyone that has a better idea please tell me.
All that said what's keeping me from doing this is that when I setup IMAP on my computer it automatically syncs/downloads all my archived mail (the all mail folder in gmail) to my computer. This is gigs and gigs of email. I don't want this on my computer anything that's critical for me to have I keep in folder in mail that's automatically backed up anyway. That said I want all my mail archived in gmail I just don't want it on my computer since I already backup important mail. Is there a way to have IMAP only sync the inbox and when I remove the email from the inbox have it archived automatically but not on my computer?
