Using macbook in clamshell mode

Hi i've just got a new external display and want to use my macbook with it. I've read alsewhere that you need a BT keyboard and mouse but does it have to be BT. Can you use a wired keyboard and mouse with the macbook in clamshell mode. I find £49 eaach for the mighty mouse and keyboard a bit pricey.
