Using Mavericks OS/X Server for Private iCloud?

Has anyone set up Mavericks OS/X Server to sync calendar from iPhone? Wanted to get some ideas how difficult it might be and if the result is good.

I want to do this as Mavericks removes the local sync and thus requires you to use iCloud which I will not do.
