So I have a funny feeling a MB would typically heat up with it on while the notebook's lid is closed.

What are some good quality cooling pads that I could get locally? If not, I might as well go online if it's better.

Ideas?

It will get warmer with the lid closed, but my understanding is that cooling pads aren't too effective in regards to the MacBook, or even most laptops anymore. All you need to do is make sure that the bottom stays unobstructed and you should be fine for the most part.
