I have a Denon stereo receiver from 2003 - this thing is a tank and still going strong. My issue is that it was before the time of HDMI and I only have optical audio inputs, which works fine with the older AppleTV unit I have, since it contains optical.

The new AppleTV only has HDMI, which potentially is a problem.

For the experts here tell me if this would work: AppleTV HDMI port to SamsungTV HDMI port >>>> then SamsungTV optical OUT to Denon optical INPUT. 🙄

Yeah that will work fine.

More modern receivers will add a few features, but that setup will work fine.

That should work. I do the same (using non-optical versions). It is a pain having to route the video out of the TV to the stereo though. Not having audio-out on the Apple TV itself can be a pain.

That should be fine. Another option is something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Tensun-Conve...jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

There are many others that do about the same thing; I'm not recommending this model in particular. But I have used something like this with an older NAD amp and it worked just fine.

That should work no problem. However in my case with an older 2011 Panasonic TV, the optical out would only pass Stereo when fed HDMI with a 5.1 signal. I believe thats the case with a lot of TVs back then. Not sure about new TVs, though.

I do this with all 3 of my Apple TV 4Ks: HDMI out on Apple TV to HDMI in on TV. Optical out on TV to optical in on receiver. Works great, albeit with some slight lip sync issues with the one TV that has a Denon receiver, but no problems with a 20+ year old Sony receiver or a Yamaha receiver. This method allows all audio from the TV to go to the receiver and external speakers.
