Using old iphone 3G after 4S updgrade

I'm trying to use my old 3G and an ipod for one of my kids now that my 4S is here. itunes will not allow me to delete nor add songs or videos to my old 3G. Is this because the new itunes version is not supportd on my 3G? Is there a way around this? I hate to waste a prefectly functioniong 3G.... Thank you
 
on top of the problem stated above, I can manually add songs to my 4s but cannot delete them from itunes. I plugged in my 3rd generation ipod in and it works just like it always has. PLEASE HELP!
