Using old iPhone as backup?

So, I will most likely be upgrading to the new iPhone soon, but I was wondering if I would be able to use my old iPhone (first gen) as a backup for when I go snowboarding? I know I will have to purchase a MicroSim-Sim Adapter but that's not really a concern. Also, will I still be able to use the internet on the first one when using the MicroSim?
