As we've all seen, this article states that "AT&T spokesperson has informed that customers upgrading to the iPhone 3G could continue to use their original iPhone as a Wi-Fi iPod."

Is there solid proof for this? I checked out ATT's website and only found information on how to give old iPhone away to a person who must activate/upgrade the iPhone with a line:

Does anyone know for sure if the old iPhone works (without phone part) after you take it off the ATT plan? My friend is giving me her old iPhone tomorrow and in return I'm buying her the new one. Will her old iPhone work as a Wi-Fi iPod for sure (we will update it to firmware 2.0 before we bring it to the store)? What exactly happens once her number/phone aspect is removed from the actual phone?
