Using Philips 32" LCD as display for 21.5 inch iMac

Using an HDMI cable straight in to the tele + in to the back of the iMac through a HDMI to Mini dvi connector. The tele shows the background from the mac but nothing on the display, am I missing something? I searched around and found that a scan rate convertor may be needed... are there any other solutions to try?
