I know that others have gone into some detail concerning importing iphoto libraries, iPhone photos etc into the new photo app. However, if like me you wish to use other software like Affinity Photo having all your photos in the apple photo library is not ideal, but i did come across a useful method that maybe of interest as below.

Our daughter lives in China and before she returned from her UK vacation, decided to transfer all her photos onto our iMac for a 3rd backup as well as setting up Time machine for her Macbook.

Importing her photos directly into the photos app resulted in photos from all over the world mixed up due to dates etc.

Decided to use smart albums to sort things and then realised that in total we had around 10 different camera types (DSLR’s, iPhones and other digital cameras and between us around 25,000 photos. Images are both jpegs and RAW.

Due to the storage space the steps below were done 1 at a time for each camera type.

  1. So created a smart album for each camera type.
  2. within each smart album, command +a, then command +k and assigned the camera name as a keyword. This allowed me to filter or pull out all photos taken with a specific camera.
  3. Created a folder on the desktop named as the camera name.
  4. Exported from the smart folder using ‘keep all originals’ to the camera named folder.
  5. Deleted smart folder,
  6. I all photos view, performed keyword search on camera name, command+a then delete.
  7. empty the bin to fully delete.
  8. On opening up the desktop folder i realised that the sub folders were all dated as structured in the photo app. This is good as most of the cameras we have , use a sequential numbering system for sub folders making it difficult to manage.
  9. For some camera types, created new libraries and imported from the named camera folder and also saving this folder on the hard drive to allow access from Affinity Photo. For the others archived onto external hard drive.

Sounds long winded (bear in mind 25,000 photos and 200Gbit storage) but now that it is set up, i have 3 user libraries: Tom Pentax, Jen Nikon, Pat iPhone. Opening up each library in turn, perform command +a and delete the camera name from the keyword field as don't need it anymore.

i can now import new Pentax DSLR photos into the set up Tom Pentax Library, add keywords for rating, reject, delete, use search tool for particular keywords and export with dates to add to the files outside of photo app. My wife can open up her iPhone library and do likewise.

Obviously not a proper management system but does give a benefit of selecting out and dating specific files for processing. I know that photo app has the affinity photo extensions but i prefer to have access to the whole range of functions from affinity.

Hopefully some may find this of interest.

Cheers
