Scribble is great to use and I've always liked using a stylus on PDAs and smartphones. Does anyone know if there's a way to use Apple Pencil 2 to insert space or backspace (I know you can scribble to remove a word), similar to the way Palm OS graffiti allowed you to insert a space by dragging stylus to the right, backspace dragging stylus to the left? Or any other gestures/shortcuts? Thanks in advance!

If you go into settings->Apple Pencil there is a link below the Scribble toggle that gives a little tutorial (or Try Scribble) popup.

Is it possible to scribble but not have that turn into typewritten text? i.e. remain as handwriting?

IMO, this is impossible. Because scribble work for flexibility to fill the TEXT AREA using handwriting. If you want the handwriting remain not-converted into text, then it won't be possible due to there is only TEXT AREA, not the handwriting just like in Notes app.
