Using serial and parallel port devices on macbook

I am considering purchasing a macbook (2GHz Core 2 Duo). I am coming
from a windows machine which has a US Robotics Sportster serial port
modem and a Umax Astra 600p scanner. How do I get these
peripherals to work with the macbook? Will they work
if I get usb to serial and usb to parallel port adapters?
Which ones specifically work reliably? I need to be able to send
and receive faxes and scan flawlessly. Will they work thru a usb hub?

I am trying to avoid purchasing new peripherals at this
point.
