Using Soundtrack 1.2/Garageband

I am using Soundtrack for the first time and can't even seem to add audio files to the timeline. When I browse and find the file that I want (either WAV or AIFF) and drag it to the timeline, the file icon just springs back to the browser panel. Any mp3 files do not even get listed in the browser panel of either Soundtrack or Garageband. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
