I was wondering if there is a way to hook up a new Mac Mini to an older iMac.

So the screen (iMac ) would be controlled by the Mac Mini.

I gave the iMac to a school in Mexico four years ago. This year I had a friend drop off a new MacMini while he was down there. Just wondering.

Old iMac 27" (pre 2011) can be a Target Display mode for any device with mDP output, but not Thunderbolt.

In reverse, new Mac Mini use mDP port as Thunderbolt, so if you want to outputting MacMini to iMac without Thunderbolt is not possible at the moment. Maybe there will be an adaptor to overcome this problem, but not right now. In short, to have fluent connection for display, data ... etc, both of device must have Thunderbolt port.

An exception if you have Apple Cinema Display (not Thunderbolt Display) you can do the connection. Yeah strange I know, quite contradictory

Another cheap approach is using HDMI port, you can use any monitor with HDMI input to do this. Yes, it may not as cool though :p
