Using the iphone outside the US

Hi,

As every summer and xmas I return to my boring old europe to see my family.

I have a european phone, but I still want to use my iphone ipod features, and maybe connect it to a wireless. How can I use it like this and avoid any charges or any kind of roaming?

Should I turn roaming off and walk around with the airplane mode on?

turning off roaming should do it... no need to turn off airplain mode.... you'll still want to be able to sniff out wifi spots
