Using the iphone that comes first.

I am a existing customer and is eligible to upgrade. i ordered a iphone 4 on Saturday from the apple site and the estimate shipping is on July 20th, im not in a rush but i really want to play with it now! haha anyways my dad got his 3GS on October 2009, my surprise is that he is also eligible to upgrade a iphone 4 so im about to do that for him on the ATT site ( seems to ship faster than apple at least .) lets say i ordered from ATT and it comes next week, would i be able to activate MY phone instead of his? and when the iphone from the apple site comes, would he be able to activate his stuff on THAT phone?
