I was thinking of getting a D-Link wireless N450 router/bridge and using it instead of my Time Capsule for WiFi (faster 802.11ac) as well as primary router (more configurable with QoS, probably faster by a few milliseconds, etc.). Honestly, I doubt I will notice a speed improvement with the router itself, but I do want to upgrade for the faster WiFi for home media streaming. Plus, the additional ports are a nice addition as I currently am using a switch with my TC to accommodate all the ethernet peripherals.

Can I hook my TC to the D-Link router and use it for my Time Machine backups? I'm assuming it's as simple as turning off DHCP/NAT on the TC and using a CAT-6 crossover cable to connect the devices?

It will work fine. Just run a regular ethernet cable (not a crossover cable) from a LAN port on the D-Link to the WAN port on the TC, then put the TC in bridge mode (screen below).
