Using Time Machine after migrating data?

I used Migration Assistant to move my data from a black MacBook to my new 13" MBP. I tried to plug in the external HD that I've been using for Time Machine backups, but TM won't play nicely with it on the new computer.

Is there an easy way to continue using this drive & continuing backups? Do I need to erase my old backups and start fresh?
