Well, i remember searching for this before, and not being TOO certain at the end of the search. So, for the sake of posterity, and google researching, i thought i'd post some visual findings for future googlers!

image 1 is prior to restore. image 2 is post restore. you could say it has been a little defragmented :p (as expected).

For the record - it had to be done to be able to make room for a bootcamp partition (please, no windows haters!) as the OS couldn't move files to clear enough contiguous space.

As far as speed goes: spotlight needed reindexing, so it was far slower to start up the first time. Since then, though, everything seems pretty normal - except i've noticed some read & writes to external drives are a bit faster, likely due to the contiguity helping the sustained read/write.

hope this is of help to somebody on the forum, or googling out in the big beyond. if anyone wants to comment, please do so!

edit: whole process took about 90 minutes after the time machine backup. only apparent downsides have been losing the volume icons, some littlesnitch rules, and losing full computer functionality for a while as spotlight reindexed.
