A couple of years ago, our home burned down and all of our backup drives went with it. Fortunately, we had our computers with us. Since then, we've developed the habit of using Time Machine normally, but then once a week, making a copy of our user file to an external portable hard drive that we keep in the car. At first, we used the backup software that came with Mobile.Me several years ago. This works ok, but every 6 months the portable drive becomes full and we have to erase it and start over. On the other computer, we just copy the entire user folder. My question is: is there a way to do this whole thing with Time Machine? On another thread someone said naming the two drives the same will cause Time Machine to do what I want, but not sure that is might not produce two unusable versions. Any ideas?

Thanks for the tip
