Hello guys.

I am trying to setup my Time Machine to make backup of my mac, to my iDisk. But i seems imposible? When i open up Time Machine and press "selecet disk", it only shows my ekstern harddisk.

Is that really so? Cant i use iDisk for backup through Time Machine?

Regards

No, it is not possible. Time Machine can only backup to physical disks connected to your machine. Your iDisk doesn't have enough storage and is not fast enough to be a good Time Machine backup, and Apple doesn't promise it to be reliable enough to be a good backup solution, at least not primarily.

Mal and his band of browncoats is correct that Time Machine cannot back up to your iDisk MobileMe network storage.

However, Time Machine is not strictly limited to physically-attached devices. You can also back up to a USB hard drive that is plugged in to an Airport Extreme wireless access point or to Apple's Time Capsule product which is a network-attached hard drive for Time Machine to use over ethernet or wireless.

thank you guys for some quick nice answers.
I cant believe that it cant be done. then i se no use for that iDisk anyways, specially not for 79 Euro a year : o

Even if you could do it, then it would take forever to back anything up as it would be severely limited by your internet connection.

Also, if the rumours are true then it could be free soon.

Is there anyway, outside of time macine, to have a specific folder on my mac keep in-sync with idisk? Thanks

Do you want to keep the folder in sync for backup purposes? Or to share it with other computers?

iDisk isn’t the only thing that you are paying for with Mobile me... iDisk is intended for access to files, storage for your iWeb website and photos. It is not intended to work with Time machine - it doesn’t offer anywhere near the amount of space that TM requires to work.

THe problem is that Time Machine’s requirements are in conflict with what iDisk’s job is for. Time Machine is about LOCAL backups, not CLOUD backups. That’s why Time Machine backs the whole drive up - which is never going to be small enough to store on iDisk.

You can use a took called Backup that is provided with MobileMe to backup certain items to your iDisk.

Of course it will not do your whole drive but you can select key directories and it will keep them up to date and backed up.

Backing up Mobileme onto the Time capsule

I want to do the opposite to thardmann. I put all my working files onto Mobileme and have suddenly realised that my Time Capsule is not backing them up (it is just a external drive on each of my computers). Is there any way that I can have regular automatic back-up of the material that I am holding on the Cloud preferably with the user-friendliness of Time Capsule so that I can go back to a previous version of a file when I have mucked it up? thanks
