I'm not new to computers but I am when dealing with problems when they arise. I took my macbook pro into the apple store to have some keys replaced on my keyboard. that's ALL. My computer has not had any other issues - been working perfectly! I got home and started having issues with it staying connected to internet. I'm using a router and my ISP is a local company (rural net). Tower based. I was getting dropped or not able to load pages. Thought it was a router issue. But desktop was working and staying connected fine as was phone. I've spent 3 days on the phone with apple with them trying to trouble shoot with settings etc. NOTHING has worked. I keep getting a page that says timed out. I have googled that and see others have had the same issue. Apple even had me do the same things that I had already tried on my own. Like right now, all morning, it has been working fine! So it's a hit and miss. As soon as it stops, I go to the desk top and it loads fine and works. So something is up with this laptop. Anyway... Apple said to bring it in but to make sure I back up everything in case they do a re-install. I have never done this before. They said to go get an external HD and use time machine. They said it was SUPER easy - just follow the steps and let it do it's thing. Will time machine transfer everything? Mostly I don't want to loose my folder with all my pictures, my emails, and bookmarked pages in chrome. I don't have any music or videos.

Yes, time machine is super simple.

For locally stored data such as photos, spreadsheets, and letters you could also just drag and drop your photos data to an external drive rather than using time machine. This way, the information can be read directly from the drive on another computer.

For email, I use hotmail and gmail. I leave a copy of the email on the servers so there is no need to back up my emails. Every time I set up a gmail or hotmail account on a new computer, all of the emails get downloaded to the computer while a copy is retained on the email servers.
