Using Tracfone sim card - will it work?

I'm stuck with Sprint service for a few more months so I can't activate an iPhone with AT&T yet. However, I'd like to pick up a first gen iPhone to use as an iPod until I can activate the phone with AT&T. If I understand correctly, the iPhone MUST have a sim card before it can be activated via iTunes, even if it won't be used as a phone. If this is correct, can I take a valid sim card from a Tracfone, put it in the iPhone, "activate" thru iTunes and use as an iPod?
