I have a 2014 Retina MacBook Pro and would like to attach a USB-C hub. Apple makes a bidirectional USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 adapter but it has a male USB-C plug and a female Thunderbolt 2. I can order a Thunderbolt 2 Cable to connect the adapter to the 2014 rMBP but what would I use to connect it to the hub? I have seen a number of cheap female/female connectors but I don't know if they would work.

Does anyone have this setup working?

Apple’s adapter is a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter, not Thunderbolt 2 to USB-C, even though Apple includes USB-C in the name. You can use that adapter to connect a self powered Thunderbolt 3 device, such as a dock which has USB-C ports, but you can’t use it to connect USB-C devices directly. You’d also need a Thunderbolt 2 cable to connect the adapter to your computer.
