In normal operation your drive should show up on your desktop. But sometimes these external units can be tricky. Have you tried to connect it directly to your Mac? On my iMac I have a card reader that only works if I connect it to the first USB slot. I don't know why but when I need to use it that is where I have to plug it in. Good luck...
