Using vmware bootcamp partition or vmdk?

Perhaps its me but it seem that in vmware if I use the bootcamp partition, performance is slower then if I used the windows 7 I installed in vmware's vmdk file structure.

Does this sound right? Is there more overhead for vmware to use the bootcamp partition over its own proprietary disk image?
