Using Windows XP on External Drive

It's possible, but not easy with an MBP. http://guides.macrumors.com/Boot_Camp_Windows_XP_On_External_Drive The guide requires you to remove the internal HDD during install, so an MB or Mac Pro is much easier.

If you can live with virtualization (VMWare/Parallels) do that, and just put your image on the external.
