This is a question to everyone who's played UT2004 on their mac. Ever since I've been playing UT2004 on a Mac the character voices (such as taunts, commands, ect) never play. I can only see it printed on the screen. Does anyone else have this problem? Sound effects, music, (and I think VOIP) all work fine in game, but the taunts and statements that characters make never seem to do.

If anyone knows how to fix this let me know.

Are you playing on an Intel Mac? I think I remember seeing problems with audio and UT2004 on Intel Macs, even with the latest patch.

Yes, I am on an intel Mac (Macbook Pro).

Anyone else have this problem or play UT2004 on an intel mac?

I also can't hear "my voice" on MacBook, but on G5 iMac it works fine.

Its an issue with Intels obviously.

BTW, I have the latest patch on both.

Same issue. Works on my G5 but not on my Intel iMac. The support people from MacSoft never e-mailed me back either. NICE.

No new solutions?

I have exact same problem as Vegabondsx , IntelMac, no voices; except for the one basic default voice- but no other voices that come with the game and voice packs don't load properly either.

Ditto.

Voices/taunts not working is the one issue I have with UT2004 on Intel.

!! Here is the FIX

After some laborious web searching, I found it.

Go to this thread in another forum:

http://forum.macologist.org/showthread.php?t=308&page=2

It will point you to this download:

[link removed, no longer available]

Be sure to take the Intel-compiled version.

Follow the instructions from the forum post:

1. Download it and unzip it.
2. Open the dir 'Unreal Tournament 2004.app/System/'
3. Rename your rename your old 'OpenAL.dylib' to 'OpenAL.dylib_Old'
4. Drop in the new one.

That's it. I've played a standard botmatch in Antalus on my new MacBook Pro 4, 2.5 GHz, and all sounds, including rude taunts, are back. The sound balance seems subtly different - weapons and ammo "pickup" ques are a little softer I think. It may have something to do with the fact that this rebuild of the game's OpenAL interface implements surround-sound. I'm going to search around a little in the config files to see if there is access to control that.

I miss my favorite female voice taunt from UT 99 though: "I'm sorry. Did I just blow your head off?" :cool:

Enjoy! :apple:

Edit:

O yes.

After adding the new "OpenAL.dylib" to your "Unreal Tournament 2004.app/System/" folder, go over to "<home>/Library/Application Support/Unreal Tournament 2004/" and edit "UT2004.ini":

[ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem]
UseEAX=True
Use3DSound=True

Instant environmental sound goodness!

Wow. The sound of footsteps placed exactly correctly as your teammates speed past you. I fragged a guy with the Flack Cannon in a narrow canyon opening in Antalus and I could here the sloppy wet bounces of his frags off the walls in all the right locations on both sides of me.

That is on headphones (I'm late at the office right now). I'm sure that those of you with elaborate 5.1 systems are going to have a lot of fun. Just don't end up divorced!

Enjoy! :apple:

So close yet so far....Arghhh...

1st, THANK YOU Setmose for looking in on this; but unfortunately still have prob;

After applying your fix, taunts/orders DO play, but still only as one of two default voices, male or female. Other basic voices (ie alien, robot, nightmare) or any added voice packs now play samples when chosen in the character select screen, but still do not play in game. Se la vie ...

Anyone know why? Thanks ...

I also experimented with:

[ALAudio.ALAudioSubsystem]
Channels=16

and

Channels=32

I currently have it at 32, and I have robot voices, alien voices, etc.

You mentioned "added voice packs". I have a lot of added maps, but no voice packs that I know of. Maybe try a clean install of UT2004 without those (but with the audio fix of course). Then add mods slowly with tests. Since we are playing around with a specially compiled module, who knows what it will tolerate? :confused:

Best of luck. :apple:

Still not a good fix. The sound quality is dismal, the volume is low, and the announcers voice is different. :-\
