I have been pounding my Mac for days and I have hit a wall. I have thrown every utility I own at a Western Digital Passport 1TB disk used as a Time Machine backup drive.
I have tried: Disk Utility, Techtool Pro, Diskdrill, Disktool Pro, and Data Rescue 2 & 3. No results.
The drive shows up in Disk Utility, but the volume is greyed out. Repair fails.
At one point, I could open Diskwarrior, and somehow the drive would mount on my desktop. I could see my backups, and navigate, slowly through the folders. Somewhat useless since you can't drag&drop copy Time Machine files and it stalls when trying to use it with TM. Upon trying to rebuild the directory in DW, the drive no longer mounts as it did and won't let me attempt the rebuild again.
Cloning in Diskdrill works for several hours, but then the drive "unmounts" (it is no longer recognized by the system in DU or DD, but continues to spin without being accessed) and my log file explodes with several GB's worth of errors in .ASL files while I sleep. (Total PITA to remove BTW...)
A Data Rescue 3 clone cuts out early with a similar drive unmount several hours-1 day after the task starts.
A TechTool surface scan runs for hours and stalls probably due to a similar unmount.
Data recovery in DR3 fails instantly. Does it have to do with the sparsebundles or drive format?
Is there another utility or technique that I am overlooking that is able to repair the HFS+ case-sensitive, journaled Time Machine format drives?
