I purchased an XS off eBay, supposed to be brand new, unlocked and without contract. My expectation is that it is one of the SIM free unlocked phones that Apple sells.

However there is a chance that the phone is on an installment plan and at risk of being blacklisted by a carrier for non-payment. I'd like to understand what precautions I can take to verify it is unlocked and without contract while I am under eBay & PayPal purchase protection.

If the phone can accept a SIM from two carriers (let's say Verizon & AT&T) does that confirm the phone is unlocked and not under an installment plan? Or is possible that with these newer dual-sim cards that multi-network access doesn't guarantee that?

The other steps I'll be taking are...

1.) Check serial number with Apple warranty status
2.) Check IMEI on Swappa (though this won't cover a future issue due to non-payment)

Is there anything else I should do when I get the phone to confirm it is indeed unlocked/non-contract?

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I am aware of the risks of eBay, a lot of bad goods can be passed through there. But that is why I want to verify everything is OK with the phone while I have still purchase protection.

I would normally avoid eBay but the discount was good enough where I felt it was worth the attempt. Also the seller has good feedback and has sold several phones before with positive reviews. Thanks.
