vanished desktop files

Using an iMac with 10.3.9. I seem to have lost a bunch of files / folders that were on my desktop (most were Illustrator, Photoshop, QuarkXpress). I've tried to use finder to search for them but they seem to have completely vanished. I'm in the right user. I lost about 95% of them. There were still a few on the desktop. Ideas or suggestions? I will have to redo all those projects which will take days.
