This probably belongs to vBulletin forums, but I wanted to ask Arn what he uses to stop spamers etc from the big three (yahoo, gmail, msn) email services from posting on MacRumors.

Do you run your own forum?

Vbulletin has an option to ban email addresses that end with gmail, msn and yahoo in the registration options.

It's not for me, it's for HardOCP. They do not allow anyone to register with a Yahoo, Gmail or hotmail/msn account. They said it's do to people spamming vB board with those accounts. I sent them a list of plug-ins etc, but who knows. I knew MacRumors used the same bulletin board, so I though I'd ask how they do it.

Yes.. I really do want to receive email notifications from HardOCP. :p

Unless we are having an unusual number of problems with a particular email domain, we prefer to allow it to be used for registration. If and when spammers join to try to advertise, our members report the posts, the posts are removed, and the members are removed as well.

It's more work for the moderators this way, but the benefit is that the good guys -- people who add to the community -- are not shut out.

My Hard account is registered with an MSN address. o_O

Thanks for the info. I gave HardOCP 5 suggestions and two plugins they could use, but Kyle has no interest. It just means I can't receive emails, but it also means I wont be very active on the forums over there.

What you've got to remember is...

This probably isn't what you are talking about, but if you own a forum, whether it is vBulletin, phpBB, MyBB or Invision Power Board, you can always just ban IP addresses that cause trouble.
