I did not hear anything about improving the horrible quality of the search function in macOS. Did I miss something in the Keynote?

Not that I know of. I remember using Alfred back in the day, I'm back to trying that one out.

yes: there was a demo of improved Spotlight search
They said it could search some new metadata (like in photo's), but it never finds the regular files I expect now, I don't remember them saying the quality of the basic search was better.

It is better. Certainly better than Monterey.

In addition to that you can now use Spotlight to quickly set an alarm, find the name of a song with Shazam, run a shortcut.

Don't listen - try for yourself - particularly the new features of indexing and searching of images. Spotlight and Finder search now find text and objects (including people). Some of it is mind-blowing - seems like magic to me!
