Hi everyone!

I have a couple of questions regarding MacOS Ventura, in particular referring to the support of real video formats.

1) What version of Quicktime comes with Ventura?
2) Is it possible to natively play videos in MKV format (H264 - H265) without the need for external codecs or to use applications such as VLC?

3) If I download an .MKV file from the network (no, not necessarily illegal) and I want to copy it to iPad (with iPad OS 16), I know that it is not possible to play it natively. But can iTunes automatically convert it to a compatible format and then send it to the tablet?

A thousand thanks!

QT version is 10.5 (1148.4.1)
NO you cannot natively play MKV videos regardless of whether they are encoded as 264 or as 265 (HEVC).
One funny thing though: You can stream them over to the AppleTV using the Airflow app (latest version 3.3.3).
BUT if the encoding is HEVC the Airflow app gives the following message: "Video stream will be converted during playback. Your device seems to support HEVC codec, but HEVC native playback is not enabled".

Now I wonder if there is a way to enable it if it's there. Maybe someone can answer that.
My device is a M1 Macbook Air.

Apple does not natively support MKV format container regardless of the codec. Without the help of third-party players, users have to convert MKV to MP4 HEVC or MOV HEVC.
