Verify Disk

I clicked on verify disk and it gave me an error about disk cannot not be verified because volume is too big... This is on an older style MBP with a 160gb hard drive.. How do I get around this because I can't click on repair disk....

Boot off your OS X install disc and try repairing the volume. OS X can't get a lock on your boot drive.

I booted from my install disk and ran disk utility.. It verified and repaired the drive.. I booted normally after that and tried a verify disk and it gave me error's again.. What is up with that.. Did I do something wrong?
