So on the surface you think, wow that’s an incredible deal only $5/mo for a brand new 12 mini? But then you stop and think, you have to trade in a phone and make 24 payments on the mini. In my case it would be an iPhone X to trade in. Is their value there??

So what do you guys think is this a good deal or not?

I would not get your hope up I think the only way you get 5 dollars a mouth on the trade in deal is if your iPhone X is like in new or mint condition I think your better off in selling it on swappa and get top dollar if its in new or mint condition then givening it too Verizon too where they can jack you up on the deal traded

Idk. I traded my x towards a 12 pro and got the full Monty. I returned the 12 pro though.

Promo is over, but I did take Verizon up on the offer. Traded in my iPhone 7 that I have had since 2016, walked out the door with a new 12 Mini for $5.41 a month for 24 months. My phone was worth about $100 trade in if I went with another phone, so basically, I got a good deal.

I actually ended up trading in an old 6 for a $579.99 credit! Crazy good promo

How are those deals even possible ? It’s pure loss for them ..there is no way 24x5$ + your 5 year old iPhone worth brand new iPhone 12 mini

I had a promo because I wasn't on an unlimited plan on any of my lines (was on some old legacy retention deal) and got three 12 minis for "free" by trading in an 11, 6s and 7. Had to pay $20 upgrade fee on each plus the taxes but no monthly payments as the credit was $700 for each phone. I will of course be paying more for my plan now, but I'm also saving money in some other ways (on the monthly disney+ subscription for example since it's included with the unlimited plans, and 6 months of apple music for all three of us, which saves about 90 bucks as we were on an Apple family plan which is $15/month - will go back to that when this expires). Figured at the end of the day I am paying about $30 more per month now, which is roughly the cost of one new iphone. So I figure I got two phones truly for free. We also now have Hulu which is something we had thought about getting anyway.

So Verizon gets more out of me per month for the next two years (and I am sure they're hoping that continues long after), and I can't leave (which I wasn't planning on doing anyway), plus the activation fees. That's I guess what's in it for them. It was also an opportunity for them to try and sell me a whole bunch of other stuff I didn't need like accessories and protection plan (which I declined). They may get good deals on the phones themselves, and they'll get a little something for the old phones. But at the end of the next two years I can make some changes and try and see if I can reduce my bill a bit again.

It's completely insane right? I kept my X and purchased an old 6 online for $40 bucks. Didn't even activate it just sent it in for the credits.

They will get their money back since you are locked in for 24 months. Two-year contracts went away just to come back in a different format.
And they tie u to the deal by making those credits expire if u pay off the phone early. Sigh

I had planned to upgrade to the 12 pro max because of the $700 att deal but realized I would be penalized for paying it off early, and it's 27 months. If it had 120hz display I probably would've gone for it to be honest.

the only thing that changed on my plan was I had to give up 1 hotspot, and the pat $5 for 24 months. So, the two of now use one hotspot, if needed. as To why the “giveaway” - only thing I keep hearing is the Mini is not selling well.

Verizon is playing the long game with this (and other) promo deals. They're looking at having you as a customer well beyond the 24 month deal. That's the hook to get you in the door. Most folks don't change carriers often, even if better deals are available elsewhere. "It's a hassle to change" and "it's not worth the effort." For every person on this forum that talks about moving to another carrier there are a thousand out there that stay put.

Yup furthermore when someone gets an itch to upgrade early they probably don’t realize they lose the remaining trade in credits either. Or stop caring because with monthly we tend to not look at the net amounts.

I see exactly this all the time. My parents don't want to hear about upgrades, tailoring their plan for their simple usage, etc. Nope. "Leave me alone."
