I thought AT&T already allowed voip services thru their 3G and 2G data.

I just signed up for Skype's unlimited calling in USA for $2.95 a month to test it. It works great so far.

According to Skype it only works on WiFi I believe.

Where I live WiFi is all over and if the test works out I may consider downgrading my minute plan from ATT.

the verizon deal will likely prevent official skype over 3G on the iphone as well as any at&t android and blackberry devices. i dont think it is a coincidence that the iphone app still doesn't support 3G calling even though apple/at&t have lifted the ban.

Yes, it's for 3G. (Verizon didn't prohibit VoIP and Slinging over 3G like ATT did.)

Verizon's already said that they expect most of their traffic to be VoIP in the not too distant future.

This is old news from February, btw. And even older news to people who had been using Skype for the past year or so over Verizon 3G on WinMo phones. (Although Skype has recently pulled their WinMo app... supposedly to make it better. Hmm.)

now this is the verizon that we all know and love. cripple fest.

Now that is interesting

I thought AT&T was supposed to be the scourge of the planet and everybody was waiting breathlessly to be able to join Verizon

I guess they aren't the utopia many have presented

I was playing around with a friend of mines Motorola Droid. Verizon just got Skype over 3g and I have to say I'm jeolous in this regard. The call quality was good.

On another different note after playing with the Droid for hours and hours in my opinion the iPhone is better in terms of easier interface, navigation and the like.

since i used to live abroad and call the states often, I think I entered the voip world from the opposite end. I was using skype on my ipod touch BEFORE i owned a smartphone. after getting a google nexus one and now an iphone and using google voice on both devices, I think i prefer google voice to skype. No worrying about network connectivity, etc.... it's really the way to go. so no i don't think it will hurt AT&T.

Since I got my iPhone jailbroken 3g over skype is not a problem and works great.

How did you get google voice? I know you have to be invited and sent my request a while ago.
