Sorry for the long post, but I think this would be a good discussion to have:

What I really want is of course the iPhone, but I can't have it until it's on Verizon.

I work for a small business; what I'm looking for in a phone:

1. Good handling of 400+ contacts from Address Book.app
2. Good web browser
3. basic email functionality
4. Sync to google calendars
5. would like ability to handle ~20 GB of music (mostly cds ripped into MP3)

Looks like the Droid and Eris will handle #2, #3 and #4, but am reading of people having trouble with #1 and #5.

Getting a good solution for the contacts is a MUST, and I'm willing to wait a little while for it. I've been making do with with my old VX8600 with an iPod touch used as a PDA. Yes I actually have both charged and with me most of the time.

Here's what I need from contacts that Google can't do:
-would really like to keep first and last name separate so I can browse a list sorted by last name. Address book and the iPod handle this beautifully.

-I need the ability to have selected contacts listed by Company but still containing a name. Address book and the iPod handle this beautifully.

These both seem like things that anyone with business contacts would want. People accuse the iPhone of being a toy, and yet it has better contacts than Vz's new flagship smartphone.

When I tried uploading my contacts to Gmail, for cards marked as companies it just copied the company name over the contact name. I could make up a CSV file and move the contact names for companies into the nickname field or something, but that's certainly not an elegant solution. Plus it means undoing some of the work I put into this list when it was brought over from Outlook putting everything in the correct field!

So the choices seem to be:

1. Moto Droid. Had a look at it yesterday. Display and call quality are first rate as others have said. Web browsing and mail reported to be solid. I didn't try music handling but have heard it's not ready for primetime. I found the physical keyboard completely useless.

2. HTC Droid Eris. Also looks promising. Like the casing; but releasing a new phone with an old version of the OS seems to beg for holding off.

3. BB storm 2 -- ? Is it ready for primetime? Does the new BB desktop for mac sync contacts well as outlined above? Can it sync to google calendars?

4. Wait for something better -- something eris-like running 2.0? vz iPhone?. Will google contacts get more functional any time soon?

Am I the only one that needs that kind of contact functionality? I can't believe I am.

Thanks all.
